When I began researching the Morilla family line a number of years ago, I only had a small amount of headstone information for Clarence William Morilla (who married Mildred L Stover) and their daughter, Elinor Lucille Morilla (1916-1965), from Orange County, California. After I began this search, I had real doubts if I would be successful in tracing this family line. On several occasions I put it away to concentrate on other lines... but I kept coming back to it.  I'm happy to say that persistence paid off.

After hitting a number of brick walls for almost a year, I finally discovered census records for Charles and Christena Morelly (also listed in places as Morelli). They had immigrated from Hanover, Prussia (current day Germany) to West Virginia in approximately 1851. The documents I found eventually came together like a puzzle and revealed that this Charles and Christena were the same ancestors I had been searching for and were the first generation members of the Morilla family in America. 

After reaching America, Charles and Christena's family began growing and they eventually began to move west, settling in St Clair County, Missouri around 1870. 

I was quite surprised when I discovered the Morilla name had been recorded as Morelli and Morelly.  I have seen numerous spelling errors in census records before, but these records were consistent for three census terms.  The surnames of Morelli or Morelly consistently appear on these census documents in 1860, 1870 and 1880.  I later heard about family lore, which suggested when Charles and Christena left Prussia, they were fleeing from some sort of persecution, which may have been related to his desertion from the Prussian military.  When they came over to America they found themselves in a ship full of Italian immigrants.  Changing their last name to an Italian spelling may have been done to help them blend in and to keep their past from catching up to them. 

A few of the second generation family members began appearing as Morelly, Later, the Morilla name began appearing around 1880, with nearly all family names appearing to have changed to Morilla by around 1900. The reason for them changing their name back is not known.  It does not appear that any line from Charles and Christena kept the Morelly or Morelli surname past the second generation.  The Morilla line continues today and I have found currently living branches in California, Florida, Kansas and Texas.
The following biography for Henry Morilla, who was Charles' and Christena's first son, was located on page 1093 of the History of Henry and St. Clair Counties, Missouri, dated 1883, published by the National Historical Company, St Joseph, Missouri. It actually reads more like a biography of his father, Charles.

 HENRY JOSEPH MORELLY BIOGRAPHY
   Henry Joseph Morelly was born January 18, 1852, in Kingwood, West Virginia. His father, Charles Morelly, was born in Hanover, Germany. He learned the stone mason and plasterers' trade in youth and also received the excellent schooling of the country. He married Christina Orderholt in Germany and they came to America in the fall of 1851, settling in West Virginia, and bought a farm where Mr. M. worked at his trade. In 1864 he removed to Coles County, Illinois, remaining there for two years. In 1866 he came to Henry County, Missouri, and located in Clinton, where he farmed and worked at his trade. He also opened a meat market which he conducted for several years. In 1870 he came to St. Clair County, Missouri, purchased a farm and opened a market in Osceola. He now has two farms and lives on section 35. Mr. and Mrs. M. have seven children: Henry Joseph, Charles, Louisa (wife of Harmon Weber), Priscilla (now Mrs. William Hurst), David, Lowry and Emma. Henry J. Morelly, the subject of this sketch and oldest son of Charles, has worked with his father and learned the stone masons' trade and butchering business. After coming to this city he opened a market with his father. The latter giving up the business, the son has continued and he is doing a satisfactory business. Henry J. is a Baptist and belongs to the I. O. O. F. fraternity.
