STOVER’S OF SCRUBGRASS AND ROCKLAND TWP.
Mathias STOVER and family came to Venango Co. in early 1800's from Huntingdon Co. Mathias was living in Washington Co., Maryland in the 1790 Census. It is believe he moved there from the Lancaster Co. area. His original name was Stauffer. He married Christina SPRINGER on Dec. 20, 1768 as recorded in the Seltenreich Reformed Congregation , Lancaster Co., PA (Thanks to Christine Forker for that info.). Mathias and his family seemed to have moved with the JONES and DAVIDSON family from Huntingdon Co. to Scrubgrass. Mathias and Thomas Jones have a deed dated April 19, 1815 where they purchased land from William Sloan. John Stover, a son of Mathias, purchased land in Rockland twp.
Mathias and Christine had children:
1. Peter E. b. June 30, 1787 and died Aug. 22, 1856. He married Elizabeth
2. John Philip b. Oct. 3, 1778 and died June 15, 1859 in Centerville, He married Francis BLACK.
3. Catherine Stover b. Feb. 25, 1771 and died Dec. 5, 1851. She married Thomas JONES(bought land with her father)
4. Samuel Stover b. abt 1790 and married Mary TRUBY. He died before 1865 when a Petition for
guardianship of Sarah Ann, minor, was granted to Samuel Stover.
5. Mathias, Jr., his tombstone says 1805, but I believe he was born before this probably around 1790 or after. His mother and father would have been pretty old in 1805 to have him. He died Feb. 21, 1883. He was to have been born in Maryland. He married Catherine Jane CURTIS.

8. Henry. There is a Henry that lived in Crawford Co., Oh who was referred to as Uncle Henry by Jacob Stover as dying about 1843. Not much is know about him. He had a daughter Catherine who married Charles STEWART.

Mathias married Christiana Springer 20 Dec 1768, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Christiana (daughter of Johann Philip Sprenger and Catharine) was born Abt 1740, Pennsylvania; died 1815. [Group Sheet]

Ref: Book of Oberholtzer Immigrants, p 61. JF3 Anna Oberholtzer b c1711 Europe m Matthias Stauffer c1704 Germany-will proven 4/10/1758, son of 1718 Immigrant Christian Stauffer.

Oberholtzer references may be mixing different Mathias Stauffers who had wives names Anna.

Ref: Some Account of Jacob Oberholtzer pg 61 discusses Anna Oberholtzer, wife of Mathias Stauffer of Conestoga Township, Lancaster Co. This Mathias is identified as from Earl Township. Both are in Lancaster County (near Lancaster City), but are about 30 miles apart.

Ref: A Midwest Line of Matthias Stouffer of Lancaster County pg 18. The 1756 will of Mathias' father-in-law, Jacob Oberholtzer, names dau. Anna as the wife of Matthias Stauffer of Conestoga. During this time Lancaster County was known as Conestoga Township and was within the Conestoga Valley of Pennsylvania.

Mathias married Anna Oberholtzer Bef 1729, Pennsylvania. Anna (daughter of Jacob Oberholtzer and Deborah Krey) was born 1710, Germany, Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania; died 1798, Rapho, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. [Group Sheet]

• Married: Bef 1729, , , Pennsylvania, USA; Wife Anna's last name has some doubt. Mathias' will mentioned his brother-in-law, Christian Zimmerman, suggesting Mathias married a Zimmerman. Ref: Stauffer Stouffer Stover Family of Penn. I believe the evidence of Anna Oberholtzer to be more compelling.

It is generally accepted (but not proven) that this Christian Stauffer (Stover) had brothers Hans and Jacob (pg 224) and that this brother, Jacob Stover, is the Jacob who married Sarah Boone on 15 Mar 1715 in Pennsylvania, aunt of Daniel Boone. Jacob and Sarah had nine children in Pennsylvania. After Sarah's death, it is believed Jacob left his children with the Boone in-laws and traveled to explore the "Valley of Virginia."

It is also speculated that Bishop William Stover (abt 1725-1800) was closely related to Jacob, the Pioneer of the Valley of Virginia and other Stovers.

Known as Christian Stauffer of Salford. Believed to have emigrated from Germany (year not known). His birth is estimated about 1680. Earliest record is a Pennsylvania land purchase in 1728. Ref: Stauffer Stover History 1899 pg 145.

Find a Grave claims a birth of 1711, however this is not likely if your first child Barbara was born in 1710, unless Deborah was Jacob's SECOND wife..
